雖然蝴蝶漫舞美不勝收,但鈔票飛起來更美;
雖然淙淙泉音極其悅耳,但銀幣響起來更沁人心脾;

“On the narrow defile, either side is steep cliff without ends. The cliff is covered with giant trees and large fern plants. They grow so nice and high that the top of plants connecting with each other in an arch shape while clear spring water running downwards through those fern arches. On the ground, waterfall comes into a small pond, as like a mirror perfectly reflects the whole picture; those moss-covered rocks stand out from the fully-grown climbing plants; sunlight freely shines onto those greenish blocks of vegetable nature; those giant camphor trees with diameter over 1 meter stand firmly from the ground. Those branch-less barks look like large candles in church and they reach upwards into the skyline; peeled stems and barks and parasitic plants all become toys for breeze; those heavily twisted and interweaved vines are like ropes to connect tree barks and branches; the air is fragrant by plants from orchid family everywhere….” - D. Thompson,1875.

But, people say…
A broader road is easier for walking, water could be took for irrigation, camphor trees could be cut down for camphor exacts refining, climbing vines could be made into baskets for sale, and orchid should be in the market. People take everything and bring away whatever they could. What’s next? Let’s set fire to burn the land into ashes so it could fertilize economic plants. Until there is no value at all, we could then figure out what else to make money.

Even though butterfly flying is so beautiful, bills flying is much prettier;
Even though creek running is so pleasant to hear, silver coin makes better sweet sound;
Even though green hills are such magnificent view, piles of greenish bills are of better scenic value.

We didn’t see clearly what was wiped off and we have no idea what price we got to pay, either.
We only know that the wheel of progress runs behind us and whip our souls with money all the time.
