Taipingshan (Mt. Taiping)

Taipingshan (Mt. Taiping)

Taipingshan (Mt. Taiping), with a desolate and grand name, is the guillotine for Japan cypress and Chinese cypress. It is a chilly graveyard where thousand-year-old giant timbers were buried. Countless workmen contribute best efforts to ensure a massacre of timbers and such monumental performance makes us feel so guilty. Today, in this place those giant heads scattering all over and the scene deeply shocks our souls. Perhaps the Chinese cypress has such miserable fate just because of its outstanding quality.

We human beings never neglect for longevity. All medicals, health care and wellness beings are aimed for the goal of “living longer.” Today people who reaches 100 years old are respectively called as centenarians, in which indicates this is not easy to achieve. For cypress, 100 years old is still like an infant because they usually live over 2 to 3 thousand years old normally. Such giant creature indeed reaches the dreaming vision that human beings could not yet. As cypress could easily reach over 3 thousand years old and still grow branches and sprouts as well as extract solar power, our medical technologies and self-flattered biological evolution theory all become jokes in front of this fact. However, when men encounter with cypress tree, they don’t always admire the outstanding live achievement. Some people are born with such specific talent that they always think of money wherever they are and whatever they see. The newly-planted cryptomeria forest shows human beings’ short-sight and short-termism that are only understood because our relatively short lives.

The December Sun is so dim that one cannot feel the warmth while Taipingshan still resists not to get rid of the verdant outfit. During the nightfall the forest presents such burning passion that implies the splendor sunset. By my side there are few new cypress shoots straggling out from the cut-off mother stem. While touching its soft skin, I cannot help but ask myself: “Would human beings grant you another 3 thousand years?”

This is an endless relay race of human nature and not a simple question could be easily answered by any generation of human beings. Standing silently, I only hear one or two crispy sound. It is made by those withered braches bunching back from my stepping. Otherwise it is so quiet that I hear nothing.
