The world in the eye of Chief Seattle (1786~1866) a century ago is like this:

In my people’s mind, each part of this land is holy,
Each slope, each valley, each plain and each bush,
They all become holy land because of sorrow and joy happened in the time long vanishing,
Even the rocks, dumbly lie by the quiet sea under the sun,
They are also full of vivid memories relating to people’s life.

In the past two to three hundreds years, the Western civilization has made the best effort to sweep all pagan deities into garbage can and consequently God is also put into the dog house. Nowadays in the world the god who has the most followers and the most strength over the land is called “money.” As a result, the world is changed like this:

In my eye of economics, each part of this land is worthy of money,
Each slope, each valley, each plain and each bush,
So long as properly developed, planned and used, they all could bring prosperity,
Even the rocks, they could be sold at good price for road paving and house building,
Year after year, the land increases its value and thus creates wonderful memories.

It is very difficult to judge which one is better than other from the two types of world. Modern life has its own convenience and advantage while ancient life has its own, too. If we must make precise comparison between the two and thus decide an absolute value, it is for sure to be in vein. I only know that seeing the giant woods put down by chain saw is exactly equal to seeing someone hit by car, which produces a feeling that the nerve is torn apart. Tree will wither, bird will die, species will become extinct, and all are the essential fate of life. A tree without hewed by human beings will wither and lie down eventually. What makes me feel so sad is that after money gradually rules over the land, all we see is figures on bills, pretty numbers, bigger figures, and more numbers. The dewdrop quivering in sunshine can no longer become a fairy; the misty frog in the morning cannot bring genie anymore, even the floral fragment cannot make them stay for a sip. The Nature is a matter of no consequence, in which on longer attracts people. I feel sad about this.
