1855年3月華萊士在鉅著《馬來群島自然考察記》中，對婆羅洲的實文然河有下列敘述：

我三月十四日抵達礦場，在之前四個月期間平均每天收集到320種甲蟲，然而抵達此地不到兩個禮拜時間，我的收藏量就暴增一倍，平均每天採集到24個新種，有一天，我採集到76種甲蟲，其中34種我從沒見過。到了四月末尾已累計一千多種，而且之後仍不斷增加，只是速率較緩罷了。結果我在婆羅洲總共收集了兩千多種甲蟲，除去約一百種外，其餘都在此地不過一平方哩稍大的地方採集得來。

華萊士把他在馬來群島的田野調查，彙整成人類史上革命性的洞見。華萊士說：「為什麼某些物種倖存，而某些滅絕？就整體來看，顯然答案是：最適者生存。」他將正文只有四千多字的劃時代觀念以郵寄交到達爾文手上，達爾文看完之後幾近癱瘓，趕在一年後趕緊搶先出版《物種原始》。如今世人皆以為演化論為達爾文之創見，但少了華萊士，達爾文會不會在生前出版演化論還真是個未知數。

不過話說回來，今天如果華萊士舊地重遊，也不會這麼幸運、這麼有創見了，他大概只能這樣寫：
放眼望去全是油棕園，一山連著一山，一河接著一河，今天採集到的昆蟲還不到20種。

「地球物種大滅絕」這齣戲在熱帶雨林已經上演了半世紀，我們恣意的認為可將大地全面改造成人類專屬的農場，沒經濟價值的弱小生物就不配享有地球居留權，就算生態鍵結偶有閃失，也能倚賴科技把過錯一筆勾消從新來過。人沒想到的是，以經濟宰制生命的同時也把自身存在的價值否定掉了，在生態全面崩解的災難降臨之前，所有的人早已淪為金錢的奴隸，在大地呻吟。

In March 1855, Alfred Russel Wallace at his master piece “The Malay Archipelago” had the following description on Simunjan River at Borneo:

On March 14, I arrived at the mining area. During the four months before I averagely collect 320 types of insects everyday. However, two weeks within my arrival here, my collection is doubled and everyday I collect 24 new species. There was a day I collected 76 types of insects and 34 out of the 76 are not seen before. By the end of April, I already collected over 1,000 types and the number continued increasing afterwards in a slower path. As a result, I totally collected over 2,000 types of insects at Borneo. Except around 100, the rest are all collected here slightly larger than 1 sq ft.

Wallace compiled his field survey at Malay Archipelago into a revolutionary insight in the mankind history. Wallace said: “Why there are some species survived while others become extinct? Over all, obviously the answer is: the fittest survives.” Then he mailed this epochal concept with an essay less than 4,000 words to Charles Robert Darwin. Upon finishing reading, Darwin was almost paralyzed and he rushed to publish On the Origin of Species within a year. Now people think that theory of evolution was first developed by Darwin. Without Wallace, whether Darwin would publish this book in his life remains unknown.

Nevertheless, if Wallace was able to visit Borneo again now, he would have not been that lucky to have such creative idea. He would probably have written like this:
All I saw is palm tree fields on hill after another hill, from this river to other river. Today I collected less than 20 types of insects.

The drama “The Grand Extinction of Species on Earth” has been played in rainforest for half century. We recklessly think that we could reform the land into a farm exclusively for mankind and the minority without economic value does not deserve a right of residence on Earth. Even though sometimes the eco linkage goes wrong, we could rely on technologies to erase the wrongness for redoing one more time. What the mankind didn’t think of is, that the moment we control life with economics we also deny the value of our existence. Before the disaster of a total destruction of eco system approaching, mankind is already enslaved by money and groaning on this land.
