Bitan

Bitan
A century ago Bitan was home to otters, cormorants and Ayu (Sweet fish). Even during 1950’s, jumping into Xindian River to capture Ayu was regarded as an occupation to make a living and support a family. During the period of Japanese Occupation (1895-1945), in order to preserve Ayu breeding, during the period of time from November to May in next year it was prohibited to capture Ayu. Upon the ban being lifted, there were so many Ayu that they swam around people’s feet. Anyone could freely scoop up Ayu from river with a bamboo scoop and they would carry full basket of Ayu home. Is that the Garden of Eden where water is clear, hills are green, birds sing and fishes leap? Somehow such place is always dismembered gradually by human beings. In Genesis of the Holy Bible, it is mentioned that God chases human beings out of the paradise. As matter of fact, it is also an irony – it is rather human beings chase God out of Eden.

The tide of civilization goes with our path and reaches everywhere. Even on the top of Himalayas one cannot get rid of the edgy technologies. There is artificial trash in the deepest Mariana Trench as well! Human beings never worry about that some day they would be pushed out of this land like otters and Ayu were forced. This is because that human nature is ridiculous! We always think that what we don’t get yet is much better than what we already have. Once we own something, even as important like air and clean water, we would gradually defocus and feel nothing about it. We can only slightly sense the precious value of something until we totally lose it, regardless it is youth, health, friendship, family love, career, physical body, environment, eco-system…. All are the same cases.

Everyone always has certain dissatisfaction toward what they have now more or less. This fact provides endless fuel for the progress of civilization. In any age, there always would be unique value on Pros and Cons, good and bad, and beautiful and ugly. If our evaluation chart could be designed in a more macroscopic and precise way, then the gain and loss evaluated would be almost equally matched. Everyone swings between the past and the future while the present would soon become history. If people in two centuries later laugh at us as primitive and laggard, it means that they might have lost more.
