Bakurasu
Bakurasu
I once chase the last ray of sunset in the forest of Bakurasu. I am so exhausted that I lie down on the giant rocks covered by ferns and enjoy the coolness of the rock. Now I climb over hills to visit it again. Other than that long-dried giant rock, I cannot identify where I was standing before. Betel nut trees viciously climb all the way from the foot of hill while the crest line of hills trembles under the skyline. The crystal-like beauty of primitive forest used to linger on and exile on the steep hill of 45 degree angle. Now it is overturned by one man, just one individual. Within two years, the wild animals and plants lost another inhabitant on the earth. (Certainly this guy is also very miserable because he can only do so due to lacking of skills and capacity to make a living in the city.) The mature of primitive forest is often counted by centuries. An organically healthy forest is indeed like a huge living sponge or a standing freshwater lake. When human beings destroy it, what in need is only a small lighter or an electric saw. It is so easy to take action while the recovery is almost not in a foreseeable future. This is the territory where law cannot govern. The sustainability of forest all relies on the intuitive ability, respect and gratitude. How much could we guarantee if the whole living world relies on such invisible intuitive ability?
Every 2 seconds, 1 hectare of forest (about one football field) disappears on the world. Everyday we lost 43200 hectares of forest. One nuclear bomb which attacked Hiroshima during WWII could burn down everything within 5km radius, which is approximately 7,850 hectares. When we link the two statistic numbers together, we find one of the most horrible massacre battlefields on the earth ever since – human beings fire off about 5.5 nuclear bombs on daily basis to kill, night and day, all year long and the target is not human beings. (Forgetting forest is part of collective living creature shows our arrogance as well as our sorrowful fete.)
This all-round battle between individuals and land is the true world war. Poor guys stand in the frontline with knifes and saws while the rich countries and syndicates stay in the back are the commanders. I don’t know who I should feel wronged: those poor guys or this land. I only know the present global economic competition constantly oppresses more land for higher economic performance. The wealth gap is increasing. The poor people have no choice but destroy the symbiotic structure of all living creatures. Eventually it would become that haves and power nations lost survival base. What is pathetic is that human beings still cannot figure out the fact that economic nuclear bombs are more horrible than nuclear bombs.
Mentioning nuclear weapon always makes us nervous and thrilled. Therefore we have all kinds of treaties and prohibitory edicts to stop this. However we don’t feel anything peculiar for the 5.5 nuclear bombs we fire off everyday. Only those senseless guys would worry about that. After all we still have short-term prosperity to spend at our will. We only look forward to having a comfortable life. As to the debts and liabilities for the next generation, that…is another story.
