人與鱟的對話
人：「嗨！你是什麼怪東西啊？你以為戴一頂硬頭盔就保護得了你啊！你看我可以輕而易舉地利用你的尾巴把你吊在空中。」

鱟：「這是很粗魯的打招呼方式，我的尾巴並不是用來吊身體的，你輕一點，別亂晃。我…..叫做鱟，名字當然是你取的。」

人：「嗯！你說的沒錯，這上天下地的東西只要被我取了名字，就表示被我管定了。我是世上最偉大的生物，世界歸我管，這是上帝親口授權的，提著你的尾巴算是非常客氣了，你最好清楚這一點。」

鱟：「你的偉大我們鱟不見得能認同。至於上帝，恐怕我們認識的不是同一位！」

人：「什麼？你敢頂撞我？現在我有點肝火上昇了，不說出個理由，恐怕尾巴會離開你的身體。」

鱟：「當然，我不是隨便說說而已，你到地球上來有多久了？」

人：「應該有一兩百萬年了吧！怎麼樣，夠久了吧？！」

鱟：「嗨！小孩子，我三億年以前就在地球上漫步了，我見過的世面人難以想像，恐龍怎麼滅絕、盤古大陸如何漂移，哺乳類如何興起，全看在我眼裡。」

人：「呵！聽起來好像大有來頭，可是你為什麼幾億年來外型設計都什麼進步，我在化石博物館看到你就是這幅呆頭樣。」

鱟：「進步？！如果你看過恐龍怎樣滅絕，可能對進步會一笑置之。」
人：「恐龍滅絕根據我最新研究顯示，有百分之九十以上證據指向小行星碰擊地球，你看過這場面，沒有錯吧！」

鱟：「小行星是經常撞地球沒有錯，不過跟恐龍滅絕沒有關係。」

人：「哈！這有趣了。你有什麼證據說不是？如果不是那又是什麼？」

鱟：「證據除了我親眼所見之外，其實最明顯的就在你們『人』自己身上。」

人：「嗯！這個我不懂，說下去。」

鱟：「恐龍最初個子並不大，應該說生物體最初大家都是小小的，你回去看看前寒武代之前的岩體就知道了。但是較大的生物體在掠食、打鬬、防禦上較佔優勢，因此大家只好朝向將自己極大化的方向進步。幾百萬年下來一代長高一點點、長大一點點，累積的成果就非常可觀。恐龍最大的可長到五十公噸，站起來有七層樓高，你知道這意味著什麼嗎？」

人：「意味什麼啊？應該是不會再被其他恐龍欺負的意思吧！」

鱟：「你說對了一部份，還有，他就變成了地球上最大的綠色植物消費者。除了最近的人以外，沒有其他生物比得上，集結一群非洲大象就足以讓草木生長遲緩，一大群草食恐龍的移動簡直就是超大型碎木機加除草機。綠色植物來不及補充供應快速的消費，生態崩解後誰都活不了，這種事在非洲草原也不只發生一次。最近人類人口的暴增也是一種極大化的生物本能驅力。你們每天消滅43200公頃森林的速度早已超越恐龍保持的記錄，恐龍從中生代三疊紀(約一億八千萬年)體型逐漸變大到七千萬年前滅亡前後，至少也花了超過一億年才把自己消滅掉，但我看你應該撐不過三百萬年吧！」

人：「胡說八道！這麼薄弱的證據對人來說沒有任何說服力，更何況我確信人會延續到跟宇宙一樣久遠。演化史上還沒有任何一種器官的發展能跟人腦匹敵，20萬年來人腦容量每10萬年就增加16.4立方公分，新質量依然不斷地覆蓋在舊質量上，沒有一種動物能像人運用語言來代替抽象意念或想法，一個想法會導致另一個想法，一個念頭又會創造另一個新念頭，我們資訊隨時相互激盪交流，每秒都有新的可能創生。相對於其他生物的變動緩慢或像你一成不變，我們在生存上可說佔盡優勢。我們能紀錄過去、觀察現在、還能策畫未來，參考各種異同，隨時調整方向。許多文明發展創新，都是這種瞻前顧後、左右逢源的洞見，長久下來我們已經發展一套絕佳的能力，那就是『抉擇』，我們不等待天擇，不靠運氣，我們會活得比任何生物久遠！」

鱟：「你們不是不夠聰明、不夠有創意，問題正好就出在太聰明、太有創意。關於『如何活在地球上』這件事，我們鱟做得比人從容而高貴，我們幾乎不會破壞自己的生境，也不會去侵占別的生物的生存空間，更不會發明一些新工具到處製造問題。當然，要人承認低等動物有智慧是一件很傷自尊的事，不過你不認為要活過好幾億年需要一點智慧才辦得到嗎？」

人：「不！那只是你好運氣，人是真的不屑向爛泥巴裡爬行的動物請益。我們的天性就是向更聰明、更強壯的人學習，你看我們科技累積的成果可以征服天空、大海、地面任何一個角落。你在地球上從沒見識過這麼優秀的生物吧？！我們還打算征服全宇宙，星際移民夢想總有一天會實現，到時候我可以考慮帶你到另一個星球看看。」

鱟：「謝謝喔！你先把腳下這顆地球照顧好再說。你這樣自信滿滿地搞下去，我沒把握能活到那一天。如果這麼漂亮的星球都被搞到山窮水盡，殘破不堪，請問你拿什麼移民？」

人：「你擔心什麼？哦！我忘了，鱟是不做夢的，只有人能因夢想而偉大，我們總能穿透模糊不可知的未來，連一千年後的事也彷彿就在眼前一般，這個本事你沒有，我不怪你。」

鱟：「未來絕不會只照人樂觀所願的一面發展，永遠有料不到的意外。以人有限的存在去推測廣大無際的世界，你不覺得有點誇張嗎？你看你們有多少失敗的預言？每天有多少算命師自打嘴巴？對剛發明汽車的人來說，能源耗竭、空氣污染是他看不到的。人只能看到他想看的，他希望看到的，政客和商業廣告最明瞭這一點，他知道人的視點無法周延，像舞台只需製造一兩處焦點，人便看不到別的。人看似有智慧沒錯！但僅限少數孤獨清明之士，當你們集合成一個團體的時候，行動跟多細胞的變形蟲一樣，除了盲目獵食擴大自己，及繁衍更多細胞之外，可以說做不出任何有「理性」的行為，偏偏群體的力量大於個人，因此智慧只能充當馬後砲。不過這也不能怪你，畢竟人只有兩顆向前看的眼睛，不像我們鱟有一對單眼、兩對複眼，可以環視180度以上。」

人：「可惡的傢伙！你始終對人心存不敬，要不是你的血液可以提煉酵素，做為醫學檢測劑，價值比黃金高好幾倍，我早就一頭敲碎你的笨腦袋！」

鱟：「其實我的寶貝並不只是鱟血而已，每個生物體都藏著宇宙盤古開天以來的大秘密，是永遠挖不完的寶藏。你這一代只能找到鱟血，你根本猜不到下一代會找到什麼。你知道的東西再多，比起不知道的部份，僅是滄海一粟。不過你們拼命丟消波塊，各式垃圾都往海裡扔，原本臺灣西海岸很容易發現我，現在一隻也無了。你的下一代想見到我恐怕不容易，想想看，我都活過三億年了，其中什麼大災大難沒碰過，竟然即將終結在人手裡。唉！幸好你們的上帝只是一個沒任何實權的名詞，要不然第一個遭懲罰的就是你。」

人：「哦！不要嘲笑我們的上帝，你不曉得上帝對我們多重要。舉例來說，如果你上數學課說3是1，那鐵定是笨蛋。但你上教堂說3是1就有一大堆智者保證你很聰明。我們先假定人被上帝放逐，身上帶著原罪，接下來做什麼都無所謂了。就像手都髒了，再多摸幾把髒東西也沒關係，尤其我們集體一邊幹著殺人勾當，更需要一邊呼喚上帝幫助，最後只需說一聲『上帝！我交給你了！』全身上下便奇妙地乾乾淨淨了。上帝滿足我們一切孩子氣、不合理、慈悲、邪惡…種種千奇百怪的思維，少了祂人的行為還真難以自圓其說呢！我們對前後矛盾，莫可奈何的事只需一句『這一切都是上帝的意思』，便什麼都交代得過去。無論我們犯下多大罪惡，多麼可憎可恨，都可以設定一個全慈至愛的上帝永遠張開手臂將我們擁入祂溫暖的懷抱。你的上帝恐怕跟我沒得比吧？不過這道理太深奧了，不是你硬頭殼裝得了的。雖然你整天泡在海水裡，並不表示你已經受洗，不過我也該放你下來了，手好酸哦！」

The Conversation between Man & King Crab

Man: “Hey! What kind of strange creature are you? You think wearing a tough helmet could protect you? See, I could easily use your tail to hang you in the air.”

King Crab: “This is a very rough greeting way. My tail is not for hanging my body. Be gentile. Don’t make me swaying. My name…is King Crab. Of course this name is given by you.”

Man: “Yes! You are right. Anything on the world is given a name by me it means I rule over it. I am the greatest creature on the world and I rule over the world. This is personally authorized by God. Lifting with your tail is already very nice to you. You’d better be smarter.”

King Crab: “Your greatness may not be agreed by us, the king crabs. As to God, I am afraid that we talk about different one!”

Man: “What? How dare you talk back to me? Now I got a little pissed off. If you don’t give me a reason, I am afraid that your tail may be torn from your body.”

King Crab: “Sure. I am only talking. How long have you been to the earth?”

Man: “It should be over one to two million years. Is that long enough?”

King Crab: “Well, kid. Listen, 300 million years ago I already walked on the earth. What I have been through is almost impossible to imagine. I saw the extinction of dinosaurs, the drifting of Pangaea and the rising and development of mammal animals.”

Man: “Well, sounds like you are indeed something. How come your appearance almost remains unchanged for hundred million years? You look exactly the same as I saw you at the fossil museum.”

King Crab: “Changing? If you saw how dinosaurs went extinct, you might laugh at the idea of changing and development.”

Man: “According to my latest research, over 90% of evidence shows that the extinction of dinosaurs is resulted from an asteroid hitting the earth. You saw this, is that right? ”

King Crab: “Asteroids hit the earth very often. This has nothing to do with the extinction of dinosaurs.”

Man: “Aha! This is interesting. Do you have any evidence support what you just said? If it has nothing to do with asteroids, what would it be?”

King Crab: “In addition to what I saw by myself, the evidence comes from you human beings.”

Man: “I don’t get it. Go on.”

King Crab: “At first dinosaur is not that big. I should say that all creatures come in small size. If you went back to check rocks in Precambrian period, you would know what I mean. However, creatures in bigger size have better advantage on predation, fighting and defense. So those animals have to evolve themselves into the maximum direction. After few millions years later, generation to generation, the accumulation has been quite considerable. One of the biggest dinosaurs could be as big as 50 metric tons weight and reach 7-floor tall when standing. Do you know what that mean?”

Man: “What does that mean? I guess than this big guy won’t be bullies by other dinosaurs!”

King Crab: “You are right partially. In addition, he became one of the largest green plants consumers on the earth. There is no other animal equal to him except human beings recently. Grouping a bunch of African elephants could consume enough that the growth of plants won’t catch up. The moving of a large group of herbivorous dinosaurs almost refers to a super-sized wood chipper plus a weeder. The green plants have no time to supply such rapid consuming. The collapse of eco-system leads no solution for anyone to survive. This does not happen just once at African grasslands. The rapid increasing of human population recently is also a biological instinctive motivation for maximum. Your record which wipes out 43,200 hectares of forest everyday already surpasses the record kept by dinosaurs before. Dinosaurs gradually grow bigger and bigger from the Triassic period of Mesozoic Era (around 180 million years ago) till the extinction at 70 million years ago. They at least spent over 100 million years to make themselves die out. I think you probably won’t make it over 3 million years!”

Man: “You talk so nonsense! Such weak evidence is not very convincing to us. Moreover I firmly believe that we human beings will be sustainable as long as the Universe. In the history of evolution, there is not any other organ comparable with human brain in terms of development. Over the past 2,000 thousand years, human brain grows up 16.4 cm3 in every 1000 thousand years while the new mass constantly covers up over the existing mass. No any other animal could substitute abstractive ideas or thoughts with languages as we human beings do. One thought would lead another. One idea could create another. We exchange and communicate information all the time and new possibility might come out in every second. Compared to the slow evolution of other creatures or something like you that never changed, we have all kinds of advantages in terms of survival. We could take down the past, observe the present and plan the future. We could consult similarities and dissimilarities to adjust the direction of development. The development and innovation of many civilizations are credited with such well-thinking-over and win-win vision. For long time we have developed a set of excellent capacities, which we could conclude as “choice.” We don’t wait passively for natural selection or luck. We will surely live longer than other creatures!”

King Crab: “It is not about you are not smart enough or creative enough. The problem is just you are too smart and creative. As to “how to live on the earth,” we king crabs engage in a more composed and elegant way than human beings do. We almost do nothing harm to the living environment we have. We won’t seize survival space for other creatures, not to mention invent some new tools causing more troubles and problems everywhere. Of course, it is so humiliated for human beings to acknowledge that lower organisms also possess intelligence. Don’t you think that it requires intelligence to survive over several hundred million years?”

Man: “No! It is only because you have good luck. Man can never learn something from crawlers in mud. Our nature leads us to learn from those who are smarter and stronger. You see, our achievement accumulated from technologies brings us to conquer the sky, the ocean and any corner on the ground. You probably never saw such excellent creature like us before. We also plan to conquer the whole universe. The interplanetary immigration will be realized some day. Then I could consider bringing you over to visit another planet.”

King Crab: “Thank you for offering. I think you’d better take good care of the planet underneath your feet first. I am not sure if I could hold on till that day so long as you keep this way with such ridiculous self-confidence. If such beautiful planet could be consumed so badly and destroyed by you, I don’t know with what qualification you could fulfill your interplanetary immigration project?”

Man: “What do you worry about? Oh! I forget that you king crab never dreams anyway. Only man could be motivated to work by dreaming. We always could penetrate through the blurred and unpredictable future. Even things in one thousand years later could be presented as like just right here right now. You don’t have such talent. I cannot blame you for that.”

King Crab: “The future won’t never only follow the positive side as man wishes. There will always unpredictable surprise. Don’t you think it is a little too much to predict the colossal and boundless world with the very restricted existence of human beings? How many false prophetic words do you have? How many fortune tellers contradict their predictions everyday? For inventor of car, he won’t foresee the draining of energy and air pollution. Man can only see what he wants to see and politicians and commercial advertisements know better about this. They know the vision of human beings cannot be comprehensive. It is just like there only needs one or two spot lights on stage and then the audience won’t see something else. Man seems very high-intelligent but it only applies to the very lonely and conscious few. When you join together as a group, your will behave like a multi-cellular amoeba. In addition to blindly predate, magnify yourself, and fertile more cellars, you probably won’t have any rational behavior. Unfortunately the collective power is always over the individual one, so wisdom and intelligence can only serve as a belated effort. I cannot blame you for this because you human beings only have two eyes looking ahead. Unlike we king crabs, we have one pair of single eyes and two pairs of compound eyes, which allow us to look around as wide as over 180 degree.”

Man: “You hatefully fellow! You never pay respect to human beings. Without the fact that we could extract enzyme from your blood for medical detector, which is several times valuable than gold, I would have cracked your stupid head! ”

King Crab: “In fact, what is precious about me is not only my blood. Every creature contains a huge secret of genesis in this universe, which is such treasure you never finish digging. Your generation only finds out the secret of king crab’s blood and you never know what the next generation will find out. The more you know, compared to what already known, you will find that’s only a drop in an ocean. Now you desperately throw wave energy dissipating concrete blocks and all kinds of garbage into the ocean. It used to be very easy to find me in the Western Coast of Taiwan and now you find none. It won’t be easy for your next generation to find me. Think about it: I have been survived more than 300 million years and undergone through so many challenges and disasters, and now I am going to be terminated by your hands! Alas! Fortunately the God you believe in is only a noun without any power, otherwise the first one to be punished by the God will be you.”

Man: “Oh! Don’t laugh at our God. You have no idea how important God is to us. If you say three is one at the math class, you are for sure a fool; if you say three is one at a church, there will be a lot of wise men guarantee you are very smart. We could assume human begins are exiled by God with the original sins. So afterwards we don’t care about what we have done anymore. It is like you have dirty hands and it make no difference to touch more dirty stuffs. Particularly when we collectively commit a crime, we need to call for God’s help the most than any other time. Finally, we only need to say “God! I am all in your hand.” Then my whole body would be marvelously clean. God satisfies our childish, irrational, compassionate, evil…numerous strange thoughts. Without his human behavior, we probably cannot justify ourselves. We only need to say “All this is God’s will” toward those contradictory and helpless things and we make confession for everything. No matter what kind of crime and sin we commit, how hateful and resentful we are, we could always assume a compassionate and devoted God embracing us with two unfolded arms. Your God is probably no better than mine. This is already too abstruse to fit into your hard-shelled head. Although you soak into sea water all day long, it does not mean you already receive baptism. I should put you down now. My arms are so sour! ”
