山坡建築
願意在險峻的山坡地上大興土木的住宅，向來只有軍事防禦據點，或是為了遠離人群的宗教修行道場，如今民宿公寓竟也爬到這上面來了。是什麼力量逼得人住到45度以上的陡坡上呢？是如建商所說的此地風景視野較佳，空氣清新嗎？不！是平地太擠了，平坦處的地價已經不是普通人付得起，即使在潛藏土石流危機的坡地上也得花上大半輩子的打拼才有一棟房子。這種事在地廣人稀的年代不會發生，而今司空見慣。形塑這一現象的原因追究起來很弔詭，它竟是一連串對人的愛，追求人塵世幸福所造成的。
開發利用，改造自然，研發醫療，發明更舒適便捷的工具，建立更完善的社會制度，激發人所有的潛能……這一切主流思維都建立在為人爭取最大福利，以人做為宇宙的中心。當然生而為人何等幸運，有著無數聰明才智，豪傑聖哲前仆後繼地為人謀利。今天任何人享用的文明果實，都是無數智慧的灌溉累積，只要看一眼大猩猩便知我們拉開了多大距離。
但以人為尊的人本主義卻不得不將圓心放在個人身上。文藝復興以來人的地位逐漸取代神的地位，進而君王種族、國家的地位也被挑戰了。我們去掉人的依賴和附著部份，把自己看成自己命運的主人，自我價值的最終判斷者，可為自己的存在設計改造一切，這樣的個人地位恐怕連古代的酋長、帝王都會羨慕呢！數百年來的思想家已為「利己」建立了牢不可破的價值，如今每個人都有權為自己爭取最大利益，至於他人或公益，除非對我有益，否則根本不必留意。思想家們卓越的貢獻，固然讓我們從無數枷鎖中解放出來，但恐怕也把世界改造到他們自己也無法辨識的地步。
我們把天空的臭氧層戳成一個大洞，二氧化碳濃度飆升不退，人口膨脹勢不可擋，貧富兩極愈拉愈大，物種滅絕史無前例。我們終於意識到大家共乘的這部文明列車，不能光是為了人自身利益猛踩油門。它需要剎車、暫停、轉彎，甚至還要有倒車的功能才行。漸漸地我們也發現了原住民禁忌、迷信、素樸哲思的價值。也看到停滯的社會並非一無可取，不過這些都不能撼動主流思維。
無論將眼睛置於何處，都可以看到人所有的基礎都建立在這片大地上，不論人飛得多高多遠，這片薄薄的地表依然是人唯一的歸屬。如果我們還要堅持：「我是宇宙的中心，一切以人的利益為準」，那只好聽任現狀持續下去──讓少數人獲利，讓多數人受苦；先讓自然生態受罪，再慢慢折磨自己。對人投注一切的愛就像母親將小孩溺愛到無法無天一般，並不值得讚許。今後的哲人必須將觸鬚伸入生態整體，讓愛遍臨所有生命，人種文明的存續全看我們能否重鑄意識的本質，轉換關注的對象。標示著人類文明瀕臨毀的末日時鐘，距離子夜只剩最後五分鐘。但願……還來得及！

Architectures on Hillsides
The reason to conduct large-scaled construction on the precipitous slopes used to be for military defense position, or the monastery far away from the mortal life. Now residential apartments are also coming over. What’s the force which makes people to live up to the slope over 45-degree? Is that as what the realty developers said, scenic view is much better here and air is very fresh? No! It is because the ground level is overly crowded and the land value is no longer affordable to everyman. Even having a house on the slope with high potential risks of mudflows and landslides, one still has to work very hard for most of his life to earn it. It would not happen during the age of a vast territory and a sparse population and now it is regarded as a common occurrence. The reasons behind this phenomenon are quite tricky. When further looking into this, it is formed by a series of devotion to human beings and persuading for happiness in the mortal life.

Land development, reformation of the natural world, medical research, invention of more comfortable and convenient tools, constituting more solid social system, inspiring all potentials inside human beings…all the main trend thinking above is based on the goal to fight for the best interest for men and the man-oriented approach. Of course, born as a human being is very lucky since there has been so many high intelligence and talents, heroes, sages and the virtuous continuously making best effort for men’s interest. The civilization fruit anyone enjoys today comes from irrigation and accumulation of innumerous wisdom. Only one glance at gorilla could well explain the difference between it and human beings.

The man-dominated humanism forces the focus onto the individuals. Since Renaissance, the position of man has gradually substituted for the position of god and the position of regality and nations have also been challenged. We cut off the part of dependence and attachment in human nature and regard ourselves as the master of our own fates as well as the ultimate judge of self value. We think we could design and reform everything for our existence. Such individual position perhaps would have been envied by chieftains and emperors in ancient era! For several centuries, philosophers have established such unbreakable value for egoism. Now everyone has rights to strive for the best interest. As to other’s interests or public welfare, it is not worthy of attention unless it is beneficial for ourselves. Philosophers’ outstanding contributions liberate us from innumerous bondages on one hand; on the other hand, the contributions also attribute to the reformation of this world to the extent that they probably cannot identify.

We poke a big hole in the ozone shield. The consistency of carbon dioxide strikes high. The population growth is so overwhelming. The two extremes of wealth gap is getting distance. The species extinction is unprecedented. Finally we realize that the civilization train collectively used by everyone cannot fuel up just for men’s own interest. It also requires functions such as brake, halting, turning and car-backing. Gradually we find the taboo, superstition, simple-mind of aborigines valuable. We also realize that a stagnated society is not worthless. However, those cannot shake the main trend thinking down.

Wherever we put eyesight to, we could always see that our foundation is built upon this land. No matter how high and how far we fly away, this thin-layer surface of the earth remains the only place men truly belong to. If we still resist: “I am the center of the universe and men’s interest should be the priority,” we cannot do anything but let the present situation continues – allow few to profit and make majority to suffer; we first allow the natural eco-system suffer and then we slowly torture ourselves. Devoting all the love to men is like that a mother spoils children too much, which is not worthy of praise. Now and future, philosophers must involve with the whole eco-system and let the love shine over all creatures. The sustainability of human civilization depends on whether we could reshape the essential consciousness and could switch the target we pay attention. The clock of the doom that indicates the destruction of human civilization is five minutes from mid-night. I wish…we could still make it!
