Four Rhymes of Kuan-Yin

In1895, Rev. George Leslie Mackay (1844-1901) wrote in Far from Formosa: “Our boat hauled the anchor and slowly drove into the outlet of Tamsui River. In the southern end upon our entrance, there is 700m-high Kuan-yin Mountain on the right. There are flourishing wild grass, bamboo forest, banyan trees and fir trees around. By the roots of the mountain there are many farmers’ houses among those old and tall banyan trees, the willow trees swaying with breeze and the prickly cypress trees fence.”
