Longfong Ciao (The Dragon & Phoenix Bridge)

Longfong Ciao (The Dragon & Phoenix Bridge)

Standing on the Longfong Ciao (the Dragon and Phoenix Bridge) and watching over either side in 180-degree, you will see on one side there is undeveloped primitive river bank while the other is cemented.

The highly popularity of such revetments is often not based on a physical need (such as river scouring off the slopes or floods on water channels) but rather a psychological one. With the cement, it is able to divide between human beings from the Nature and further upgrades human beings to the monitoring level over the Nature.

It does not make any sense to have an aesthetic discussion on the scenes of either side. Those administrative governmental departments, legislators, constructive contractors or local residents won’t be serious about the aesthetics. What will make them fight over is the interest allotment of the renovation construction projects. On the other hand, the flat world created by cements already brings us a brand new aesthetics. Once we are accustomed with it, we might feel that the uneven Nature very ugly. The establishment of revetments emerges as the symbol of civilization progress. Rivers without renovation are called “wild rivers,” in which means “uncivilized river.” It is so thoroughgoing that one hardly sees a section of river banks that are not artificially touched and processed. We have to visit the spouse- populated deep mountains and valley to be able to witness vast amounts of living creatures rest by the river bank. Each of those living creatures finds a small space for propagation.

“Pretty” or “Ugly” is truly a matter of directly visual perception while “civilization” or “barbarians” could own different definitions. However, “life and death” is perfectly clear. Once the habitat contains colossal and versatile creatures is destroyed, only one from hundred could live on and be accustomed with an artificial habitat.

This is to slaughter living creatures nurture and feed our life. It is a slaying of the innocence and not political performances worthy of boasting or credits we should be proud of.
